這一本小書，是法國羅蘭地方，尼哥拉哈曼先生的言論與書信。他是一位下級社會的人，沒有甚麼學問；他曾當過兵，也作過小工。他在一六六六年，進巴黎的修道院作廚師。此後他改名為勞倫斯。他卒於一六九一年的二月，享壽八十歲。


本書一共有四次的談話，大概是他的朋友鮑夫先生替他記錄的。還有十六封信，是他自己寫的。他的言論與書信，只注意一件事：就是與神同在。不只在祈禱時，和神同在；就是在事務最忙的時候，也是念念不忘與神同在。他這樣作，真叫他的生命，越過越聖潔、越敬虔、越愛神，除神之外，宇宙和世界對於他，好像空白似的；有了神，就有了一切，即使下地獄他也甘心，他的心，常常充滿了神。他的光景，正像詩篇七十三篇二十五節所說的：『除你以外，在天上我有誰呢？除你以外，在地上我也沒有所愛慕的。』他與神同在的經歷，有四十多年之久。他以這為他的『寶貝』，所以他就孜孜不倦的勸勉人。他的話，好像膏油，能使人的靈命滋潤，凡全心愛神的人，都要看見他話的寶貴。
